Maximize Space in Minimally Sized Bathrooms
Tiny bathrooms with non-existent storage space can be transformed into a comfortable retreat without a complete renovation. The trick is to find ways to maximize the space you already have. Here are some tips to boost useable space in your small bathroom:
Downsize Everything. When inches count, consider:
-
1 cutting down on the size of a shower, sink or vanity. Add Storage. You can add shelves or cabinets in those areas that are recessed or don't get much traffic, such as over the toilet. Or, consider using the drawers in the vanity as storage for towels and such.
-
2 It's All Reflective. Mirrors will make a small room look bigger. Don't limit yourself to a medicine cabinet mirror; install a large vintage mirror over the sink, or create a wall of mirrors.
-
3 De-Clutter. Choose simple, solid materials like wood, glass and stone to create a sense of serenity.
-
4 Fool the Eye. You can make the ceiling look higher by hanging window curtains a few inches above the window frame, and hanging shower curtains a bit higher above the tub.
-
5 Look for Add-on Possibilities. Instead of increasing the size of your bathroom, consider borrowing unused space from other rooms. You can create a makeup nook in the bedroom or large closet. Or, access space on a private patio by replacing a window with French doors.
-
6 Use the Corners. Corners can be used for storage if you equip them with angled shelves. Even cornerangled sinks and showers are available to maximize space in a small bathroom.
-
7 Sinks on a Pedestal. Reclaim extra room by replacing the vanity with a pedestal or console sink. Look for sinks with wide lips for soap and toothbrushes. Towels and such can be stored in a cabinet over the toilet.
-
8 Color Choices. It's best to stay with one color on the walls, particularly light tones or neutrals. They will make the bathroom look bigger. You can choose bright accessories for a color accent.
